Work-embedded learning: Roundtable companies across the state have been sharing stories of their summer interns gaining real-world work experience. A few recent stories to highlight: McKinstry hosted a six-week Heavy Metal Summer Experience for students from Highline Public Schools. Boeing hosted hundreds of students in summer development programs for high school and postsecondary students. And, Amazon shared stories of summer interns working in software development, marketing, business operations, and data science.
Creating credential pathways: Amazon and Lake Washington Institute of Technology have partnered to create certificate programs that will prepare students for careers in satellite manufacturing. The school is offering two new state-approved certifciations: aerospace assembly specialist and aerospace manufacturing proficiency. To assist students, Amazon has partnered with the Lake Washington Tech Foundation to provide scholarships up to $2,000. Read more here.
Supporting students and advancing equity: Retail Lockbox recently announced investing in a new endowment to the University of Washington Foster School of Business to support Black students through the Consulting Business and Development Center. Learn more here.
Industry developments: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory recently celebrated the opening of the Grid Storage Launchpad, a 93,000-square-foot research facility that will accelerate the development of energy storage for the nation’s electrical grid and transportation sector. Lease Crutcher Lewis was named No. 2 in Engineering News-Record’s annual listing of the top general contractors in the Pacific Northwest. And a recent update shows the significant role Boeing is playing in the post-pandemic recovery of the aerospace sector, an industry that generates more than $71 billion in business revenues, supports 194,000 jobs, and delivers $19.4 billion in income to Washington employees.
